Flood and Water Damage Treatments
Flood damage in your home can come from several places. If left unchecked, water damage can deteriorate the structure of your home. Porous surfaces like floors and walls are susceptible to mold and mildew growth if neglected after flood damage. Our professionals at Paul Davis are the experts to call when your property takes on water damage.
Before The Paul Davis Arrive
Before a Paul Davis pro arrives, there are a few easy things you can do to help make the job speed up. To salvage everything on your property from water damage, it’s crucial to act quickly.
Be sure your home is safe to enter. Power down all electronics and breakers around your property to avoid electrocution. This may sound overly cautious, but flooded appliances can be hazardous when exposed to water.
First Things First
A serious flood in your home can leave furniture and possessions wet. Remove all your small things to prevent increased water damage. Level, dry areas are best for airing out books, magazines and other paper materials. Do not forget light fixtures and other tabletop pieces either. You can begin cleaning when you’ve relocated books, small items and other dampened materials.
Fans and air conditioning circulate air through your home and begin drying the area. Soak up all smaller puddles and standing water with a wet mop and towels. Though you may want to try, do not use a standard home vacuum to remove water. These appliances aren’t designed to clean up pools of water. When you’re ready to move furniture, lift up seating like heavy chairs and sofas using wooden or cement blocks to above them above the wet areas.
Carpet and fabrics take on weight when soaked. All that extra weight makes leather goods, fur and rugs hard to lift. So if you have to remove a carpet, lift with caution. Hang draperies, clothing and other fabrics away from the wet area to dry thoroughly. Keep in mind that water damage can affect such items permanently, so you might not be able to save them.
The same water weight that damages carpets and rugs can hurt your home’s foundation. Ceilings and floors may bow when they absorb too much water weight, it’s best to stay clear of these areas.
