Flood and Water Damage Treatments
From broken washing machines to leaky pipes, water damage varies in origin and scale. Wherever it starts, it can result in severe problems for the foundation and stability inside. Wooden surfaces and drywall are susceptible to fungal invasion when flood damage is neglected. If your home experiences water damage, get the specialists at Paul Davis.
Before Our Contractors Come to Your House
It can be tempting to try and remedy the flooding yourself. That said, we recommend leaving the heavy lifting up to the pro. However, there are some things you can do before the Paul Davis crew arrives. You need to move quickly to salvage the possessions in your home from water damage.
Be sure your home is safe to work in. Unplug all electronics and breakers around your home to avoid electrocution. This may sound overly cautious, but flooded appliances can be harmful when exposed to water.
Salvaging Items & your Home
Water leaks into everything. To prevent water damage from destroying small possessions, remove them before larger items. Level, sturdy areas are ideal for airing out books, magazines and other paper materials. Don’t forget light fixtures and other tabletop things either. Once you’ve moved handheld items, magazines and any other wet materials, the cleaning can begin.
To begin the drying process, try using air movers or air conditioning throughout your home to channel air throughout the area. Leave the larger spills for the professionals, however, you can wipe and mop easier spots. Though you may want to try, never use a normal home vacuum to clean water. Standard vacuums aren’t equipped to clean up bodies of water. When you’re ready to move furniture, stack furnishings like heavy chairs using wooden or cement blocks to above them above the wet areas.
Water adds weight to surfaces, carpets, and fabrics. All that extra weight makes fur, rugs and leather goods difficult to lift. This means when you must remove a large fabric item, lift carefully. Hang clothing, draperies and other fabrics away from the flooded area to dry thoroughly. Items like furniture may not be easily saved.
In severe flooding situations, the extra water weight can affect the structural strength of your home. Because of this, do not go near sagging ceilings or bowed floors. Areas like these have likely absorbed large amounts of water and could fall around you.
